GCSE Maths Completing the Square Revision

Harrogate Tutors is in the process of covering all the difficult GCSE Maths topics in a way that highlights why the topic is difficult and how to overcome it using the best resources available. This week we are looking at completing the square which is a topic in its own right but can also be used to solve quadratic equations. Completing the square was on the old GCSE Maths specifications but it rarely came up in the exams. As the new GCSE Maths exams have developed more and more challenging questions and topics are appearing so there is always a chance that completing the square could appear again on this year’s paper.

The standard method for completing the square results in the quadratic equation being put into the form (x+a)2 + b where a and b are integers. However there are occasions where a and b aren’t integers which appears in the level 8 and 9 questions.

If you are searching for GCSE Maths resources and you want to practice completing the square then we recommend Maths Made Easy as the best place to go to access free resources and completing the square worksheets.
